Mtwara

Mtwara Region, on Tanzania’s southeastern coast bordering Mozambique, is the country’s largest cashew-producing region. In Cashewnut Board of Tanzania 2025/26 season auction data, Mtwara sold roughly 232,500 tonnes of raw cashew nuts — about 54% of the four-region total reported for that season. Cashew here is a smallholder crop marketed through the national auction system, and Mtwara town’s coastal location gives the region direct export access, distinguishing its supply chain from inland producing regions that must move raw cashew nuts overland for auction and processing. The region’s economy is more concentrated around a single export commodity than most other regions profiled here.
